Manipulation of Time & Space
Growing up, I was never engrossed much in BBC television apart from the occasional spout of British classics. Great expectations, Pride and Prejudice etc … But one thing I have never managed to truly sink my teeth into is Doctor Who
Doctor Who for Dummies
- “The Doctor” is about 900 years old and isn’t human, he’s a time lord
- Him and his often hot, female assistant travel around in the Tardis (the big blue police box) sorting out various problems which always seem to affect the existence of the entire universe
- The Doctor never actually dies, when there is a threat to his life he regenerates into a whole new body, but maintains the same mind. This explains why so many actors have played The Doctor
- It’s full of Sci-Fi and really geeky, but it’s also quite scary and very funny! Fans of comedy will be ingrosed, especially with the seasons staring David Tennant and Catherine Tate
Why is it so darn good!?
Ahhh! If only I knew, I put it down to incredible script writers. The lines are brilliant, the plots are gripping and it’s so easy for new viewers to understand because each episode is a stand alone. Obviously, to understand back story and the point of each episode, you have to endeavour into more than one. I recently watched an episode called ‘blink’ which featured these scary, weeping angel statues that kill you when you blink, very scary, very geeky but so brilliant! I was hooked, instantly. But why the sudden change of heart? Why have I switched from Breaking Bad or Gossip Girl binge watch sessions, to intensively analysing a Britsh, Sci-Fi? Well, it really wasn’t my choice. As part of my media course, we have to know the industry, audience and texts for three advertising campaigns (Chanel, Dolce & Gabanna and Berandos) three films (Casino Royale, The Dark Knight Rises and The Kings Specch) and finally, televeision shows (Breaking Bad, The X factor and … You guessed it; Doctor Who!)
None of these were my choice, they were all selected by my media teachers and I have enjoyed all of it. But honestly, when I watched Breaking Bad I thought it couldn’t get much better. But Doctor Who has blown me away. Forget wanting to know what happens, analysing it for all its camera shots, props, narrative techniques- I appreciate it on a whole knew, analytical level. And the marketing strategies deployed are incredible! Aside from Downton Abbey, it appears that this show is one of our most loved over in the US. They have very good taste in British TV and it only seems fair. They gave us Gossip Girl, Suits, Orange is the New Black … And we give them Downton Abbey, Doctor Who and David Beckham!
